does the phone have to be close by to play music ? null

Define close? I have no problem putting the phone down on the sideline of a basketball court in the gym and shooting baskets on a half court if that helps give you an idea of range.

According to an online rating/review site the 'line of sight range' was tested at 171 ft. I believe this was based on connecting to an Apple device since the H1 chip helps with connection strength.

No, you could be quite a few feet away and they still work

I’ve used mine with the iPhone in the kitchen while I was in the garage. Everything worked great with 3 walls between them. I went outside and the started to cut out. So I’d say about a 40 foot distance.
