“Regarding iPads, at Best Buy, I don’t understand what “unlocked” means. Is this a returned or open boxe device? Also, What is the reason for having a SIM card for an iPad? What would that do? Would it allow Phone calls to be answered?”

Unlocked means you can use any service provider I.e T-Mobile,at&t or version SIM. Reason for having SIM card in IPad is that you can use internet if your provider provides you 4G or 5G data in that way you dn’t have to rely on wi-fi always. You can't call like phone but you can call via the app which works with data.

I believe if your cell provider is one that Best Buy deals with, you can get a better deal but you're committing to only using that company for wireless data. It will not let you use the iPad as a phone without installing an app. It will let you use internet anywhere you have cellular service. I tried my SIM from my phone just to see if it worked and it did. Not much of an issue for me since I use home WiFi and have a hotspot in my truck.
