“I could have sworn I read that my laptop that I just ordered comes with 1 free year of AppleCare.. is that correct? I am new to the MacBook world and am not sure how that works. Thanks!”

The MacBook Air comes with a limited 1 year warranty, 30 days of phone support, and no accidental coverage. You can optionally buy AppleCare to extend that to 3 years of warranty, 3 years of phone support, and accidental coverage (albeit with some deductibles) but the MacBook Air does not include AppleCare by default.
