A:Answer Unfortunately, Squaretrade is a COMPLETE rip off. I got "insurance/an extended warranty" for some refurbished hard drives I purchased (4). 2 of them had to be replaced. When I first dealt with Newegg (who I bought them from), they hadn't yet switched to Squaretrade for their warranties, etc. I had a new drive heading to me within 10 minutes, with an RMA sticker in the box for the old one. 100% covered.
A couple of months later, a 2nd drive failed. I contacted them again, expecting the same service. They had then switched to Squaretrade. After probably 2.5 hours on the phone, I got to talk to someone who said all he could offer me is what his "algorithm" about the current average lowest prices were for my item, thus how much they would cover. Now, they didn't simply cover "the hard drive" (like I had paid for when I bought the extended coverage). They were going to give me a cash payout for what their "algorithm" said I should get. That was somewhere in the neighborhood of $60. I was told that that was the "average price" their system found. NOWHERE, and I mean NOWHERE did I find anything less than about $65. And that's including used/refurbished/etc. If you're getting an extended warranty, don't get it with Squaretrade.
