Apple laptops no longer come with an optical drive due to changing demands. Consumer media is typically accessible through streaming – online, rather than through physical means. However, since Apple understands that there are some cases where an optical drive is needed, they do offer an external optical drive that you can purchase separately for that purpose.
There are probably a few more reasons as to why Apple removed the internal optical drives in their laptops, but one reason that I'll note is that a good number of tech companies and their laptops today are starting to phase out of an internal optical drive in favor of a lighter, thinner laptop. Apple is no exception to this trend, as the company holds quite a reputation as an innovator in technology, both consumer and otherwise.
