Place you curser at the beginning or end of the text you want to highlight, press and hold the "Command" key while pressing the arrow in the direction of what you want to highlight. Once all letters or words are highlighted you can stop pressing the arrow key and let go of the Command key . No you can use the keyboard to highlight.
