• The first Gen Apple Pencil works on the older IPad models while the second Gen works only with the Gen 4 IPad Air, Gen 3rd or later IPad Pro 12.9in, or Any of the 11in IPad Pros.

• Pencil Generation is specific to the Generation of iPad. Gen2 pencils will wireless charge and Gen 1 Pencil will not. Gen 1 pencil can charge using the port on the ipad, no need for additional cables, cradles or adapters. My ipad Air was not Gen 2 compatible if that helps.
