• Yes it will work fine & it doesn't have to be paired. I had similar issue & purchased remote in store with no problems at home.

• Yes, if you have an older version Apple TV, then get that same remote, its only $20. and it's the same remote , just new! I got mine in store at Best Buy. Just check online to see if they have it in stock before you make the trip.
