no you don't, as Apple TV understands the capabilities of your TV. However, you obviously don't get the benefits of the 4K experience, and so may just want to consider the Apple TV 4 rather than the 4K. Or, consider upgrading your TV to a 4K TV.

No you do not need a 4K tv for the 4K Apple TV to work ! I have plugged it into several TVs that are not and works great !
