Out the box the GPS is enable, the only thing that must be manually enabled is the celular service in which you must get in contact with your service provider and give them the IMEI for the watch and you should be good to go! Typically costs about $10 a month to give it service

You are not required to use a specific carrier. Without the cellular plan for the watch, you cannot stream music on your watch unless you carry your phone as well. Still nice to track your run info and see all your stats with the GPS functionality.
