If you buy the GPS version, then you have to have your cell phone nearby, yes. If you buy the GPS + Cellular version, then you don't need your phone nearby but you do need to add a $10 line to your cell phone bill so that your watch can have connectivity (without wifi or cell nearby).

As long as you have cellular activated there is no need for the iPhone

No you can leave your phone at home and still have access to your phone functions
