The computer is meant to really have the two drives work in-tandem. The drive should be able to be turned off in BIOS, however it may affect warranty. The best thing to do is contact customer service to get more information. you can contact them here: http://www.asus.com/us/support/ If this is done, it wont really effect battery life. Either way, you're using a computer and what really eats up battery life is the display. A lower brightness will definitely increase the battery life. Also, shut down apps or programs running in the background that are unnecessary, but please don't attempt this unless you know what you're doing.
