I have a 6800 sq ft house and use two routers as a mesh network. Effectiveness totally depends on walls, layout of home and placement of router. If it doesn't cover everywhere, it's super easy to purchase a second router and turn it into a mesh network. The second router doesn't have to be as powerful as the first one if there are only minor areas that don't have good coverage. Totally worth trying.

Having said that, the thickness of walls, and the number of floors can affect a signal. I have my ASUS RT-AC5300 located in an office in my basement. Our home has a total of about 3200 square feet and is a split level that is really three stories counting the basement. This router blasts on its own a solid 5 bars throughout my first two floors and even outside next to the house, and at times vacillates between 3 to 5 bars on the top floor of our home. We have set up other routers to serve as relays or bridges to ensure that we're blasting five bars throughout the house. This is an excellent base unit for a "mesh" type network.
