The RT-AX86U is backwards compatible. The firewall can be setup by logging in to the router web address and using the router application to turn on the firewall. I used the ShieldsUp website to test mine and it passed all the port tests.

I usually buy less expensive routers but the overall ratings were so high I purchased it after returning another less expensive router that I was not happy with. This one is easy to set up and use. It is a solid choice as far as I am concerned.
