Well it depends on what mode you have it in and the level you chose to have your fan at. but normally no it doesn't make noise to the point of distraction

Please try again later.So it depends on what mode you have it in, I actually use this for the same sort of purposes you do, if you have it in turbo mode it's as loud as the fan will get but it also has the best performance, however it has several other modes such as silent performance and windows, Windows is pretty good for just average browsing silent keeps your computer quiet and performance is just style towards good performance and cooling without getting too loud, turbo which is kind of an overclock feature absolutely loud and very noticeable
