It can but that is not a task I suggest the average person undertake. It requires removing the back cover of the laptop, removing 4 screws holding the battery in and disconnecting a wire harness that with unskilled or unsteady hands could easily be damaged. Thus while it can certainly be done, unless you have experience in laptop repair I highly recommend you leave such an undertaking to a professional. In my experience though usually either something else will break or I will upgrade to a better laptop before the battery becomes a concern. Now, that being said I've had an overall very positive experience with this ASUS laptop and I have zero regrets in purchasing it. I bought it to run 3d cad software (very processor and graphics intensive) and it performs flawlessly. In fact it actually runs on par with the $2500 xeon based workstation I use at work which is no small feat!
