No, the vent is attached to hinge, opening the display is what opens the vent. I would not attempt to play games with this and external display without the laptop opened up. There are no holes in the piece that opens from the bottom and the display would block the top holes, so all intake air would be blocked. So in short, always operate it with lid open.

The entire assembly relies on small gears that are affixed to the lid's hinged connection to the rest of the laptop body. In theory you may be able to but it would require that you open the laptop and almost fully disassemble it and reconfigure where the teeth on the gears are. This would also interfere with normal operation when you undock it and try to open it, it would either 1) not open, 2) open further than it should, or 3) fall off the gears and dangle. I'm not even sure it's possible honestly but I would advise against it. There are some good YT videos that show the innards of this laptop including this mechanism. Something you may be able to do however is take the vent off the back hinge which can be done easily to service the laptop and have something near the back/sides to lift the laptop so air can get through. You would want to make sure to reconnect it if you were going to take your laptop anywhere with you in a more portable aspect. Be advised though, I'm not sure how tough this area is and doubt it's made to stand up to doing this for long. If this is your plan maybe see how much replacement bottom doors are as well?
