it can, but you manually choose that option from the monitor's menu Menu > System Setup > Input Device > NB/PC > (and there are these other options) Charging From NB/PC | No Charging from NB/PC From what I see, if you choose Phone instead of NB/PC, it will not be powered after the batteries are drained.
