If she's already got a cell phone with AT&T, I think you can just put the sim card into the new phone. It doesn't have to use a prepaid plan. I will advise you though that I will use cellular data unless you switch it off on the phone. It's got preinstalled apps like Maps and YouTube that you can't remove or disable. The volume control was also problematic for my elderly grandfather. Took multiple attempts by his caregivers and much frustration before he learned to hold it a different way so as not to turn down the volume.
