Once you build it keep it in the normal position, this shelf is fragile.

If you were to lay it flat on the floor and then push it under the bed, I think that it would become too heavy to access it easily. It would not be easy to select a DVD or to replace it. When it becomes full, it is very heavy to move. Also I doubt it was designed to be durable enough for that kind of use.
