The turntable has a button you push that automatically moves the needle from the resting position to the record and then returns it to resting position upon completion of the record OR if you push the button again,

Push the start button and the arm raises & lowers automatically or you can push the up button and it will raise the arm and then you move the arm over the record and then push the down button to lower the arm.
