“I have a audio Technica turntable home and I was trying to play a record on it and it was skipping. I put the record on a different one I had and it played fine. could it be just a bad stylus? its not even a year old... and are they pretty universal?”

Check the tip of your stylus for debris. Check the general condition of the stylus assembly. For example, is the cantilever centered under the cartridge. Check your tonearm for proper calibration to insure the tracking force (stylus pressure) is accurate. Experiment with the Anti-skate setting.
