“I know you can't combine two channels into one ear bud, but can you actually use just one of the ear buds...Say the left one or the right one on it's own? I want to be able to use one bud until the battery dies then use the other one.”

You can use one at a time, but you won't get the full stereo effect of the music. With that said, some instruments won't even be heard because of one side being used instead of both.
