Books are charged a one time fee. You can also download free books through the Nook store or even check out books using your library card. Most magazines offer both a one time annual fee OR a monthly fee.

There are over 3 million titles in the NOOK Bookstore, and more than a million of those are free, as are many of the catalogs and apps that you can subscribe to. You can also purchase or borrow ebooks from other sources as long as they are in a supported format (ePub or PDF) and sideload them to your NOOK using the USB cable.
