“The HDMI port is not recognized when attached to a separate monitor (says no HDMI signal to monitor) Is this because the unit is not powered? I should be able to run HDMI out to a monitor and view the same screen as device or as an extended desktop?”

Check your screen output resolution. You don’t need the hdmi to be powered to send signal. You’re probably sending 4K to a 1080p monitor and it doesn’t like it. Update your monitor if anything.
