This router needs to be wired to the modem or modem/router, then you can access it remotely via WiFi. It takes an Ethernet connection to the Internet to make this work. Also, when it is set up, it looks for the Internet on it's Yellow colored connection, and downloads firmware to update itself, then it requires this connection to get the internet that it broadcasts on WiFi. It is also necessary to set up the router via one of the LAN connections on the router when it is started initially. I hope this answers your question. If he has a Modem/Router then it would require being wired to one of the ports on it. If he has a separate router hooked up to the Comcast Modem (modem only) without a router from Comcast, you would have to either get ask to connect to his WiFi, or plug this router into his router. Just remember you can only have two routers in the same line; three will not work in the same line. One router with four ports connected to a Modem can support four routers, and no more. So you see, this must be plugged into the Internet to work; either directly at the modem, or at the first router.
