tldr; If you have $100 to burn on a router (AC or otherwise), move along. Even though I dropped $100 on this as an AC router investment to make the most of my 300Mbps connection, I wouldnt even use this router on a 5Mbps pipe. There were quality/performance issues with both wifi channels, AND the switch. This router (AC1200) was problematic almost immediately but got worse over the course of two weeks. 5Ghz channel WiFi After 24 hours, the 5Ghz channel had dropped all devices, but was still broadcasting. Attempts to reconnect could not complete. Reboot router resolved issue temporarily, but would occur again. The quality of the connection was poor REGARDLESS of the location of router and distance of device(s). Just pinging the gateway from multiple devices that were next to the router would spike (to over 10seconds in extreme cases), or chunks of ping requests would drop. This was for both 2.4, and 5Ghz channels. The nail in the coffin was when my primary PC's bandwidth deteriorated, which is directly connected to a 1Gbit port on the router via CAT5.e cable, started to deteriorate and could not break 150Mbps down (my pipe is 300Mbps, which the router was capable of giving me). Remove the router from the network, run my pc straight into the modem, 320Mpbs down. Put router in the front of the network again, down still peaking at 150Mbps. Something is defective on the router, wether its heat related I have no idea. It's a small casing, doesnt look well ventilated, and I gave it a go in a few rooms in the house all with the same results. I bought mine at Best Buy and there is a 1yr manufacturer's warranty that Best Buy honors in store, so since I was 2 days out of BB's 15 day return policy I was still able to return it to them for store credit instead of dealing with Belkin. Good Luck!

    Fool me once....

This router is a disappointment. About once a month it needs to be rebooted to restore the Internet connection. It has happened often enough to have allowed me to find the problem, but not the solution... Initially, I thought Comcast was at fault, and tried the modem reset, cables, and eventually swapped out the Motorola Surfboard for a Ubee. My connection was restored each time after rebooting both the modem and router...or in the extreme swapping the cable modem. Belkin support was no help. When I called I was instructed to reboot the cable modem and the router, and then the problem was 'solved'. Eventually, when I had gone through the process several times and identified the router as the problem I called Belkin support to swap out the router...but three months had elapsed and my 'free support' window had ended, even though my warranty hadn't. I explained the situation to the tech and asked for a warranty return. I was to I had to sign up for a support contract to diagnose the problem before being able to return the router ...if they found an issue. I asked what they would be doing differently to diagnose the problem...perhaps some diagnostic software. The rep could not (or would not) tell me, and I refused to pay the ransom. I have no confidence that they could or would do anything differently or provide any solution. I even located a Belkin customer advocacy manager on LinkedIn and sent him an inquiry, but received no response. I have had several wireless routers; Draytek, Netgear, Linksys (while Cisco), and now Belkin. I have worked in high tech, specifically in large networking and unified communications companies, and would be all over the customer service organization if one of my customers had received this Poor support. It is highly unlikely I would buy Belkin again OR recommend to a friend.

This router is annoyingly tippy, but works well for relatively short distances, probably equal or better than others in its price range. I had problems with range as I wanted the useful range to extend from the family room to the bedrooms in a 2600 square foot home. The far bedroom got only one bar and spotty reception. I bought a Belkin extender, which helped, but only got two bars. I learned that extenders are a poor way to improve reception as they are very inefficient, as they lose much of the signal while amplifying the remainder. Better to use the money for the extender to buy a better router instead. Which is what I decided to do. I took them both back to the store, planning to get the next best. Then I decided not to play around - with the money from the returns, and adding about $50.00, I could get a router that was known to have more range than most. I knew that, when it comes to receiving signals, its way better to choose extra. So, I bought the Linksys WRT 1900AC. I understand Belkin now owns that company. Well, that turned out to be a good decision! We not only got full, five bars, we got five bars in the shop, which is a separate building about 100 feet away! Not to mention additional features - like being extra fast!. No more hassles and such a strong signal is well worth it. Forget buying any "extender", just get this router or another as powerful (not many are) with the money, and get far more signal to boot. I am still recommending the Belkin F9K1113-BBY for those who don't need much of a signal as I think its competitive with others in its price range, but if you think you may need an extender, forget that - use the money for a much better router and be in fat city as far as a router is concerned. One less hassle! Dave in Seattle, WA

    Caution advised for complex environments

My first Belkin, an N600 DB, set up on a single laptop with Windows 7, required a few hours of work before I called Belkin support. That time, they were able to help me get the router networks working. However, IMHO, caution is advised for using the Belkin AC1200 DB router in a complex environment. My current environment is a Windows 7 Toshiba and a Windows 10 ASUS, and in addition to the private networks, I was trying to set up guest networks with security on both laptops which may have added to the complexity. The default open and unsecured guest networks were so restricted that they were useless. After at least 20 hours working on and researching issues with 3 1/2 hours of those hours was spent with Belkin support persons, I was unable to set up all the networks on both laptops. After that, I gave up and went back to Bestbuy and got a NETGEAR AC1200 router. I set up and tested a 2.4 GHz on the Windows 7 and a 2.4 and 5 GHz on the Windows 10 in 1 1/2 hours without using support. I did skip setting up the NETGEAR guest networks. In the end, I can't recommend Belkin, and I can't imagine buying another Belkin product myself.

I ended up returning the product and here is why. * Setting up was a breeze. I use MAC address filtering and was able to configure with no problem. Devices connected except for one major problem. My daughters phone Samsung S4 and and an iPod kept getting the same IP address using DHCP. Tried updating the firmware but it was the latest one. The only way I was able to get rid of the issue is by giving the devices a static IP by using the router's built-in "IP reserve" feature. I should NOT have to though ** The connection was not good in comparison to my old D-Link DIR-601 which is a 150 mbps max wireless N router. I've never had an AC router before so can't give speed comparison using the 5ghz but let me just say with the laptop 5 feet away from the router, I did get 700+ mbps but with it 20 feet away with no wall blocking it, the speed went down dramatically to 169 mbps. I felt it should be at the same speed, if not, at least close to it but not drop by 500+. As far as the N connection I only had 65 mbps while my old d-link always gives me 100+ PROS: I love their dashboard. It looks good, makes it easy to navigate and find your way around when configuring your router. As the title say, maybe it was just bad luck for me as I've read other reviews and never read a post with the same issue as mine.

This router had some pretty cool features that I actually liked. I liked the fact that it had a health restore button. In other words it would reboot itself on a schedule you can choose from. This was to ensure the router was working at its capacity. They have a web based configuaration page that was very simple to use. If you needed to secure ip addresses for printer or other wireless products that did not need to have an ip address change everyday was simple. The disadvantage for me was that most of my technology is a bit older so I could not fully take advantage of the 5.0ghz. The cable prodivder that I get my internet service from actually preferred a different brand. The 800 helpline was something better to be desired. unfortunately I was not able to understand part of the instructions as it seemed there was a language barrier. during the help it seemed like they were going off a some generic interface of the web browser. I could see how a person that is not that technical savvy could be frustrated and return this unit Instead of having to deal with the 800 number. The one thing I did not think to do is call Geek Squad. You might have to pay a small price but the peace of mind is priceless.

I have cox ($245.00+ monthly - fast package). I had a Linksys Cisco 5 or so years old. I had bad wireless upstairs and just dealt with it for years. I saw this one on sale, read the "strong" reviews and set it up. Setup is quick, go slow, follow directions and you will receive SPEED. I am a nerd and internet speed junky. I need HD and I need speed. I used to get 20 on the Internet Speed Test on my phone when sitting next to the computer, I used to get 10 or 11 upstairs. I NOW GET 30+ UPSTAIRS AND 82 DOWNSTAIRS (tested around 6.30pm). The strength of the router is Great. The location of my router is behind 3 walls to get to the upstairs. When others stream HULU, Netflix or HBO, they just use the "media" account.... no stream problems at all.

    Does not work with VOIP

Bought this Belkin router to improve upon a 9-year old wireless-n router, but it was not better. Had to return it. The Belkin router would not work with my VOIP adapter (a Cisco SPA122). No matter how closely followed VOIP provider's instructions, it never produced dial tone. Original router worked 1st time. Also quite basic interface. Firewall is either off or on, nothing in between. Parental controls allow to bar a device from internet completely, but not to ban specific websites or keywords. Would not accept 64 hex characters as wi-fi password, only passphrase, so I could not copy previous router's SSID & password - would have to assign new password to all devices in the home. Final strange feature: The ports at the rear of the unit lie in a recess which is too narrow to fit fingers in to unplug ethernet connectors. You need pliers or a thin pencil to get cables out of the top two connectors (!!?). Best Buy gets 5 stars for return policy. Buy online and return to store.

    My old one worked better

We got a security system and while they were setting it up, the technician noted that our router was out of date. It wasn't a big surprise as it was a very base model, almost 5 years old and one of the antennas was taped up. He suggested we replace it to take full advantage of the internet speeds we were paying for. So we go to Best Buy having no clue what we are looking for. We explain the size and layout of the house as well as the router location to an associate and he recommended this router should meet our needs. While I'm in my home office, sitting right next to it, I have great signal on all my devices and my internet is quick (although I do notice frequent but brief glitches). However, if I go to any other room in the house, the signal is very weak or non-existent. Now, I understand the placement of the router and obstructions have an impact on the signal. However, my 5-year-old-broken-antenna-basic-router was set up in the exact same spot and we never had signal issues throughout the entire house. When I'm sitting in my living room, I can pick up the neighbors signal from 2 houses over still but not my own from upstairs. I'm not impressed with this new fancy router at all.

      Hi canicoe,

We appreciate the time spent in sharing us your experience with the Belkin router. There are some of the factors that cause getting a low or weak signal from the router:

      •Distance problems
      •Physical obstructions
      •Wireless interference
•Transmit rate on the wireless router
      •Outdated firmware on the router
      •Power outage

To avoid these, we'd suggest that you adjust the wireless channels of the router. Also, make sure that it is on a higher location or in a less interference area. Here are some links that might help you:

Wasn't really a huge fan of this one. Needed a new router because my old Netgear was glitchy dropping signals. So, bought this one because it was a good price for a Mid-tier AC1200 router. Got it home and immediately I wasn't a fan of it having 1 light on it to indicate everything. I shouldn't have to need a map color legend to decipher what the different color lights mean. Looks like they were trying to be cheap with the one light node. Setup was a bit difficult in terms of setting up a router. You can't really understand what's going on or how it's booting because of the 1 light indicator (argh) Long story short, ironic all my older Netgear N600 router still outperformed a newer Belkin AC1200. Took that thing back the next day. When customer service asked me what was wrong and I told her, she said "yeah, go with a Netgear or Lynksis in terms of routers." Funny she says that, my previous 3 yr old Netgear router is still better than this one. This may be a good entry level router for someone just starting out. But if you've had a previous one, don't think you'll like this. Hope this helps!!!

i purchased this router with the help of an associate who said that this router was fast and could have multiple people on however that wasn't the case.... I got home set it up which was easy but within a few hours I wasn't able to use the wifi i had to reset it which meant that i would have to re-enter the password and sure enough after few hours later the same thing would happen... then at times without even realizing it we would lose the wifi and be using our data and again i would have to disconnect and reconnect it. I was also told the range was great but there were times when i would have few wifi bars and other times when i wouldn't get a signal and have no bars.....all in all the product wasn't what i was told and really didn't work.. Thank goodness i still had the receipt and i returned the product for store credit.

I work from home and I had lightning strike my house and had to temporarily replace my Buffalo N750 router. My house has above average network enabled devices. I have network switches and a wireless access point and about 12 of the internet enabled devices are connected to my network at all times. I think this router is good for home use, it was very easy to setup. The administration tools are very intuitive and easy to configure. Wireless devices have no problems connecting and stay connected. Any idiot can get this router up and running and secure in under 10 minutes. The issues occur under heavy traffic on the connected devices that are hard wired (ie. Tivo, NAS drive, office computers) I would routinely get IP conflicts and when I was under heavy VPN network traffic from my work computers. The internet connection would become unstable and the router would need a rebooted. This would occur almost on a daily basis when I am working on my home office machines. I was glad when my Buffalo router came back from the repair shop. I now use the Belkin router as a wireless access point and it works very well in that capacity.

I bought this router because of the "award-winning" status and the dual-band features. The price really seemed right compared to other routers, so I grabbed it. A little background: I've always had fairly bad experiences with Belkin products, from wired routers to audio cables and adapters to power cords but I thought maybe things had gotten better. They haven't. The management software for this router is awful. The wizard interface usurps all control for users who want more than just an out-of-the-box WiFi network. Navigating the software was clunky and it was difficult to find anything I was looking for. They obviously spent more time designing the UI (buttons and layout are actually quite beautiful for router firmware) and not enough time thinking through how people will want to use it. I returned this router and got myself an ASUS AC68U instead. I couldn't be happier that I made that decision!

I bought this router on the recommendation of a best buy employee. He suggested that this router would be the minimum to meet my needs. I got it home, opened the box, and tried to set it up, unsuccessfully. Had a family member come to help, who is much more computer savy than me, and he could not get it to work either. The box said it came with a set up disk and a manual, neither of which were in the box. After hours of no success, I finally decided to return it, and get another one, with the hopes that it would come with the manual and set up disk. It did not. However, after an hour or so, I was finally able to get the router to talk to my modem, and finally got everything working the way it should. Apparently there was something wrong with the first one. Since then, it has worked wonderfully. Has handled multiple devices at the same time with no problems. I think it is actually a little more than I needed. Would definitely recommend it if you can get past the start up phase!

    Solid Router, Worthless Features

    Posted

So today I purchased a Belkin router. AT&T provided me with a new modem last week and the WiFi signal was extremely weak. I loved the fact that it was dual-band router and had 2 USB ports (1 3.0 and 1 2.0) on the back. The reason I opted for this router over an access point is because I wanted to be able to plug in an old hard drive I have laying around and use it for network storage. Apparently Belkin doesn't care about their software and has not updated the drivers to work with any OS X past 10.7 (Or past Windows 8). Which is unreal. So basically the USB ports on the back of the router are completely worthless. This was confirmed by Belkin Customer Support who said "our software team is working on it and you may see a driver update in the future". Well its been over half a year since OS X 10.11 came out. I am astounded. There is a 30-day return policy that I will be absolutely taking advantage of..

I was tired of renting a modem and router from the internet company. I didn't want to buy one of theirs. I talked to some friends and they said a high quality router was more important than an overly expensive modem. This router seems like a good middle of the road to high end. It was on sale I think for about/less than $200. It has dual band which is important and it is compatible with the two main types of modems (depending on which type of signal your internet provider uses). The main thing I like is the strength of the wifi signal and the range. Currently in a two story Duplex it reaches all areas at maximum signal strength. Also, multiple devices seems to have no ill effects at all. I have all the household devices connected wirelessly which includes two cell phones, two laptops, two TV boxes, a Playstation 3, Nintendo DS and a 3DS, and a printer. Set up was fairly easy, just put in the installation disc and follow the instructions.

    Problems with DNS passthrough

A router is supposed to act as a firewall, DHCP and DNS server for your private network. This router does two out of three. Firewall is fine, and so is the DHCP server. However, while it correctly assigns itself as the DNS server for your network, it doesn't actually provide the DNS service. When I used it as designed, no device on my network could get name resolution for anything on the Internet. IP addresses worked fine, so NAT was doing its job, just no DNS. If I ran a DNS server on a computer on my network and assigned it as the network DNS server, then everything worked fine. Even a firmware update did not help. The only reason I give this two stars is because I can still use it as a respectable Wi-Fi access point and gigabit network switch. However, if I didn't have the networking background that I have, there's no way I could have ever made this box work. Last time I buy Belkin, as this is the 2nd time I've had issues with their network hardware.

I was attracted to this device in part because of the low price but also for its advertised ability to handle multiple devices at multiple bandwidths. I've had this for a couple of months now, and I'm just not impressed. It has three access channels: the standard WiFi access point, a high frequency, high bandwidth media channel, and a guest access channel. The media channel, with the best specs on paper, is the least reliable. Sometimes I can't connect to it at all. Sometimes I have to toggle between the three channels to find one that works; strangely enough, sometimes I have to switch to the guest access. We're only talking about three people in the house, all within 40-50 feet, so the demand isn't outrageous, and my internet service is decent (15 mbps). As long as it works, I can deal with the switching, but there are days I feel like I should have bought something else.

Hi. Thank you for sharing this insight with your experience. It might be possible that the firmware of the router is the cause of this problem. We recommend that you perform a firmware update on the router, then reset and configure it again. Here’s the link on how: (http://www.belkin.com/us/support-article?articleNum=10797) that should fix the problem. Should you need further assistance, you can email us at BelkinCares@belkin.com. Please include your contact details, location and the link to this review in the email. We hope to hear from you the soonest. Belkin

Good mix for gaming/streaming and surfing

Provides 2 bands - ideally with one for streaming and gaming at the faster 5GHz, and the other, at about half that speed for regular surfing, etc., - your choice. Works good, but as others have pointed out, during set-up, every time you make a change, the router resets to save and re-write new configuration - which takes time. Sales person said that some buyers have complained that it periodically loses connection with internet so must be reset. Belkin has added a feature called "Self-Healing", where it can be set to automatically does a soft reboot once a week at a user-specified time/day. This is good, but unfortunately it looses connection with your modem, so it requires a modem reset to connect. Hopefully they will fix that in a firmware patch. The "Self-Healing" mode can be toggled off (which we did), and haven't had any issues with losing connectivity for over 3 weeks to date. Also good range on the lower band for going through walls.

Bought this router to replace a Belkin N600DB that died after about a year and 1/2. Because that router had questionable range for my "streaming" needs in another room, I wanted a router that would give me better range. This new router was about $30 more than my old one, but I expected that the extra cost would give me the performance I needed. It was easy to install but the range was terrible. I live in a larger home but it only gave me about 35 feet of range through one wall at the most. My Roku box would not even pick up the signal and my laptop would only show "one bar" of reception at 35 feet. I spent 45 minutes chatting with Belkin Tech Support. We tried changing channels and resetting the router but to no avail. I returned the router and bought a Netgear R7000 which cost twice as much, but has great reception throughout my house. So far it is apparent that you get what you pay for.
