Once you do the burning off process, it’s much better. My first attempts were unpleasant to smell. Before cooking with it, wash the basket and tray. Then, run it at air fry 400 degrees for 40 minutes, rest it for 15 minutes, then repeat this process three more times. After that, oil the basket and tray (use a paper towel or spray with non-aerosol oil spray) and run at 400 degrees for 15 minutes. This did the trick for me to burn off any residual odors, and my food after that tastes fine.
