There would have been an extended, enhanced warranty (Geek Squad Protection) offered at the time of checkout for the product, which would have covered battery issues - I was offered one tonight when I checked out with my own. Also, there is also a standard warranty issued by the manufacturer, which covers manufacturer's defects, which is what you describe it as being.

Take it back to the store and ask for a manager. Clearly this is a problem and Best Buy should deal with Bissell, not ask Best Buy customers to deal with Bissell.
