A portable hotspot taps into 3G and/or 4G cellular networks, just like a smartphone does. Once it's zeroed in on cellular data connection, a mobile hotspot can share that connection via Wi-Fi with nearby laptops, tablets, game consoles, or anything that can connect to a Wi-Fi network.

This hotspot stopped working after one day according to my brother. We kept it a little longer to make sure it still worked but it never did. Now I’m being told I can’t get a refund because of a policy. Also there was never an option for me to get a refund because it claimed I never had an account with them. If it never worked I should be able to ger a refund. This was a waste of money.
