yes, it is helpful for spatula's and knives and yes, it is removable - easy out and easy back in.

I lay some larger utensils in the middle and on one side. It can be removed if you don’t want it, but instead I removed the giant basket from the bottom rack.

Removing the silverware basket can give you additional space for larger items such as tall plastic cups that won't melt in our dishwasher. And the third rack is removal, should you choose to do that.

I have never removed the top rack and am not sure it is removable. This is a super quiet dishwasher. Hard to tell it is running at all.

This results in a headroom space shortage in the bottom rack meaning that your dinner plates that used to fit now are struck by the sprayer arrached to the bottom of the middle rack (on some models. This can be a real nightmare. Make sure that your center rack height is adjustable. Ill never get a third rack dishwasher again. There are too many tradeoffs in room for that useless rack.

I line up all the silverware, serving spoons, knives, spatulas, thermos lids, measuring cups, graters, small spice dishes. Forget clumping the silverware in the cutlery basket. Dishwasher comes with a basket, but I don't use it unless I need to, I take it out and use the top rack.
