We have this and don't have any issues with starting it. It's usually 3 buttons: On, Normal, and Start. When it's done, the whole thing turns off for us. So we turn it on at night when we go to bed, and by the morning, it's done and the whole thing is off. Check your manual because there's a setting to automatically turn it off when done. It's called "Auto Power Off". Hope that helps!

Page 29 of the Operating instructions shows you how to choose from among three options for this function: continuous illumination, one minute or two hour lighting.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.One possible reason for having the display stay lit is to indicate that the dishes are clean. How many times have you run a cycle only to have someone take a glass out, after it's done, to get a drink and then close the door without emptying the dishwasher? Without any indicator that the dishes are clean, someone might come around later and put dirty dishes in a washer full of clean ones. When the washer is unloaded, turn the light out and then it may be reloaded with dirty dishes.

Please try again later.I would imagine that you have already solved your problem, Sue, but for those who have a new Bosch, model #SHE863WF6N, it may be helpful to know that I experienced the same situation as far as the number of steps needed to turn the machine on to a desired cycle. I finally called Bosch because I could change the cycle only after a hit and miss effort, even after trying to follow the instruction booklet. Well, the computer had to be reset, which process the very nice gentleman walked me through. Turn the dishwasher on, hit start once, time display goes to 0:01. Press start again for about 4 seconds. Wait for drain to stop (about 1 minute). time display reads 0:00. Choose your cycle and options, then press start. All of these steps done with the door closed. Hopefully every time, it will be good to go with just a push on, choice of cycles and options then start. Next I have to navigate the steps to have the machine turn off automatically. I can hardly wait. : (

The manual explains how to change the time to shut off after the unit is done cleaning. One note, make sure the door is closed when changing the setting otherwise you won't be able to make the chnage.

I’ve not really noticed having multiple steps, but I guess to each his (or her) own? Honestly, this dishwasher cleans my dishes so well the number of steps just wouldn’t bother me.

I still have to refer to the manual so I do find the controls complicated. One time I tried to put something else in after it started and then I decided to change the settings. Just opening the door doesn't reset anything. I had a hard time figuring out how to cancel my first settings and then set up the new ones.
