• Hi Roger, you can personalize your settings in the Bose Hear app to up the World volume and allow you to hear things you wouldn't normally hear.

• Yes you can. The Bose app on your phone allows you to change from noise canceling to noise amplification. There are different settings as well for your sound profile. One amplifies the sound in front of you(tv/conversation) and cancels noise in a roughly 240 degree from the user. The other amplifies sound from all directions(you can hear a loin drop. I have severe hearing loss from the military and I find myself wearing these as suped up hearing aids. My only complaint is the battery life...needs to be longer. It does charge really quick.
