Yes...you set the direction you want to hear from and volume. Ihave used nicely in crowded areas focusing where to hear.

The earphones are a bit bulky and have microphones built in. So they will be obvious to the person you are talking to. My wife doesn't mind them if they help me "understand" voices. -- they take some practice adjusting the iphone app volume and frequencies to hear the best. So you will be adjusting the phone app until you get it set right for the environment. Requires some practice. Once set you don't need the phone. -- The band around the neck is a bit bulky, The wires from the headset band to the ear pieces are short. The earpieces are a bit difficult the place and keep in the ear. With experience these issues are less a problem. -- expensive. look for sale and compare to other options like hearing aids. I decided to keep mine and use it for TV voice clarity. They are very adjustable to hear many things you can't hear with poor hearing. You can adjust to amplify any listening frequency.

We don't use your cell phone to pick up the sound, so you don't have to put in in the middle of the table. The best way to know if Bose Hearphones will work for you is to try them. I hope you will.
