I haven't had the occasion to try this with this printer. With other printers, however, the printing will stop and alert you to the ink issue. In my Epson, it would not print at all until I replaced the empty cartridge. I'm going to make a guess that the Brother will do the same. One thing to try is to change the print settings to b&w, thus taking the color cartridges out of the equation. Again, I haven't had this scenario show up with the Brother
