A flashing light means that the unit is not completely preheated. Wait until the light is solid before brewing or steaming. If you are preparing to steam milk, it is recommended in the manual to first turn the knob to the left and expel some hot water. I found that I have to repeatedly turn the knob to the right until the blinking stops. Then turn it back to center and quickly turn it to the right again to steam your milk in the pitcher. I find this part to be the least intuitive of all the machines functions.
