I think it would be a beneficial upgrade, the nice thing about DSLR cameras is that they have better quality than point and shoot digital. They may seem pricier, but DSLRs don't get upgraded as often compared to your run of the mill standard camera. I have this model and I love it, the pictures look great, there are a plethora of features. If you want the camera to do the thinking for you, you can have it on an auto mode, if you want to have more control of your camera, you can have it so it's more manual. This is a great replacement to a regular point and shoot, without breaking the bank.
