There is no sound when heating the water. The only sound from the kettle is piping sound (3 times) when the water reaches its boiling point. This kettle is best design for office and home use it very silent.

It also doesn't whistle - it just beeps when it's done, and at the end of reaching its temp it makes a kind of water heating hiss. I don't think it's too loud for an office. I'm considering buying a second kettle for use at work (paired w my brita pitcher), and I'm in an open office environment.
