“Has anyone else tries this telescope? Should you really have to squeeze the focus knobs together to get them to adjust? Or is this more likely a sign that the knob has failed and is stripping out?”

The Inspire 80AZ focus knobs shouldn't be squeezed tightly for moving the focuser in and out. It may have become misaligned and needs realignment.
