The my q is attached to your home wi-fi, which has to be on all the time, however when you want to open or close the garage door, your phone or tablet can be connected via cellular and the device will still operate.

Also - in my experience it needs a very solid wifi signal If the connection is "weak" the device performs erratically Hope this answers your question.
