• It is optional. You can have the screen on all of the time or you can set it to turn off after a number of minutes. If you set it to turn off you will still have a blinking red light you can see to let you know it is recording.

• There are three pushbuttons under the screen. The left one lets you choose between front, rear, split and blank screens. It sounds like you have it set on blank, but it is recording, even though you see nothing, due to the red recording light being on. This is useful to avoid distraction while driving, and conserves battery power when parked (although having the screen on might deter a break in).

• Its probably the screen saver, meaning its still recording screen just shuts off. You can change that in the settings.
