Hello Jeanie, Thank you for your question. The internal dimensions are approximately 17 1.2 inches wide by 50 4/8 inches tall by 18 7/8 inches deep. The recommendation of 5 inches of space on all sides is to ensure the proper air flow around the unit. We cannot recommend having only 1 inch of space on one side. Regards Ann
