  • QuestionIs Exterior body of this laptop made of Aluminium or Plastic?

    Asked by MJ.

    • Answer These are plastic, and generally the Inspiron 3000 series are somewhat flimsy. If you travel a lot, you may want to consider a hard sided case, or one of their business-oriented laptops like the Latitude (also plastic but pretty solid, no issues with mine so far) or Precision (very robust but pricey). We have had several “public era” Inspirons and they have always been very flimsy. I’m told these are not much better. Having said that, I did just order one for my wife because she will be using it on the desk most of the time and occasionally on her lap or coffee table, but always at home. If she needed to take it with her, I would have spent more.

  • QuestionDoes this laptop support windows 11

    Asked by Anonymous.

    • Answer Windows 11 Home is pre-installed. S-Mode was turned on, apparently, I found out when I tried installing CPU-Z ID. No problem turning it off.

    • Answer Yes

  • Questionavailable w/o touch screen? If yes, price difference.

    Asked by Anonymous.

    • Answer True, you can just turn off the touch screen, or just never touch it. But either way, you are then paying for a feature you won't be using. Joy Systems' is the best response here: consult with a BB sales rep or employee about an equivalent laptop without that feature. I'm sure there are many.

  • Questiondoes a pen work with this touchscreen

    Asked by jim.

    • Answer If you are referring to an active stylus, such as Apple Pencil or Samsung S-Pen, no; this is a basic multitouch touchscreen which I believe is capacitive. So an ordinary stylus will work fine, or if you want a precision stylus a disc-type might work better. These are generally okay for precision, but I'd be very careful about using them on this plastic-film screen.

  • QuestionCan the graphics card be upgraded possibly to AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT or NVIDIA RTX 3070

    Asked by Nykko.

    • Answer 1. This laptop, like the supermajority of those available, doesn't have a separate GPU. 2. When a laptop does list a separate GPU, IN THE VAST MAJORITY OF CASES, there is no separate "card," as would be found in a desktop. There is a separate CHIP, and this is soldered in, meaning no practical upgrade (short of replacing the entire motherboard). This is even true for laptops aimed at the gaming market. Only some notebooks have a true separate card, like the Framework. Of the hundreds of distinct laptop models released each year, probably less than a half dozen have the capacity for a real, physical, separate video card. Also, all those with this flexibility are priced much higher than their equivalent without it. 3. Your options: (a) buy a desktop with the features you want. You always get more bang for your buck with desktops. (b) Buy a laptop with an AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT or NVIDIA RTX 3070, or equivalent. (c) Buy a laptop with a Thunderbolt port (preferably Gen 4), then buy a separate, external GPU later (btw, these are also expensive).

  • QuestionIs this laptop good for editing photos

    Asked by Anonymous.

    • Answer Like "Joy Systems" responded, light editing. which means basic or occasional. Basic would be cropping, enlarging/shrinking and the like. Occasional would include more resource intensive work, such as image manipulation, which you could still do, but would take longer without a dedicated video card or chip.

  • QuestionWould this laptop be a good computer to get my daughter through Engineering college? She'll be using various types of programming, solidworks, AutoCAD, python etc...

    Asked by E.

    • Answer If she needs to use any sort of 3D modeling software, she will be much better off with a gaming laptop or an even more expensive XPS or Precision line - something with a dedicated graphics card. My daughter needed something more advanced for one piece of medical software which used 3D modeling, and the old Inspiron she had wouldn't come close. She ended up getting an MSI Sword 15001, which worked beautifully for her needs. This particular Inspiron not only has integrated graphics, but it isn't even the better Radeon 610M (a separate graphics chip on the motherboard). The CPU itself has set aside some of its capabilities for basic graphics, such as required to run Windows, and that's about all its good for. In this price range, you'll want to look at clearance/sale/open box deals on less expensive gaming laptops. Good luck, I do hope you can find something like that - she will be much happier with it!

  • QuestionWhat is max ram capacity?

    Asked by Megan.

    • Answer Dell supports up to 32GB. Mine came with two "Kingston" (SKHynix) 8GB modules, so you will definitely want to swap them out with some quality Crucial RAM. There are some resellers through Walmart selling these things with 64GB RAM but I don't know if the UEFI will allow that much without modifying the firmware - which I wouldn't recommend.

  • QuestionDoes this laptop support examplify for the 2025 bar exam?

    Asked by Anna.

    • Answer Joy Systems is absolutely correct: don't depend on someone else's evaluation on whether critical software will run on your computer. Check the Examplify website for PC requirements and use these to compare to any computer you are considering buying. You don't want to have a disconnect at the moment of a test (even a practice one) or when you have set aside time to study, only to find your device useless for that purpose.

  • QuestionI want to replace an old Dell desktop with this laptop. I have an ethernet connection in my home office. Since this laptop does not have a RJ45 connection will I need a dock to plug into?

    Asked by Barry.

    • Answer No dock needed. Just buy the USB-C or usb-A to Ethernet adapter on any internet retailer. They are around 20 bucks and they work really well.
