  • QuestionWhat type of RAM does this computer accept? I want to upgrade to 8gb but I it wouldn't accept the RAM I bought already and I don't want to waste my money getting more. If someone could link me to ram they have bought and used in this computer!

    Asked by itsgeoff.

    • Answer This is the exact memory my 3558-5500 had installed in one of the 2 available slots. Hynix 4GB DDR3 Memory SO-DIMM 204pin PC3L-12800S 1600MHz HMT451S6BFR8A-PB I ordered an exact match for the 2nd slot for a otal of 8GB (which is the maximum memory according to Dell) Be aware past Dell laptops have accepted more memory than stated, however i do not know if this one does. Also, this Hynix memory is a Single Rank memory, you may want to match it with an exact replacement to avoid memory issues. I did try a 4GB Crucuail Dual Rank memory in slot 2 and it recognized it, recognized the 2 SODIMMS as a dual channel (not to be confused with Dual Rank) config and passed memory diags. I thought it was best to match the Hynix in the end and returned the Crucial part. FYI, the mixed config of single and dual rank sodimms did have an extra GB of memory access speed listed by memtest86 (~13.8GB/s vs ~12.8GB/s.) So for maximum memory access speed I suspect pulling the single Rank Hynix SODIMM and replacing with 2 new Dual Rank SODIMMs would provide the best speeds. However the extra money didn't seem warranted for me to throw away the stock memory for a 5-10% theoretical speed increase. If you replaced the HD with an SSD maybe you'd notice. With 275GB SSDs only about $60 on sale it might be a great upgrade if you've spent all that time ripping apart the machine to install the memory. Also, if you replace the memory, make sure you but some "blue thread lock" for the screws that hold the machine together, or they will be falling out in a few months.

  • QuestionHow can I add my memory to my laptop. There is nothing on the back for me to put the memory in.

    Asked by Toomer.

    • Answer It's not convenient at all. You have to remove the bottom panel, as well as the keyboard and DVD drive. Then you remove the top panel. You'll have access to the RAM at that point.

  • QuestionI'm planning on upgrading the RAM from 4GB to 8GB does anyone know where I can learn how? I also want to upgrade the hard drive to 7200 RPM or an SSD if I can learn how.

    Asked by Nickname.

    • Answer Don't bother with a 7200 RPM. The new 5400 RPMs such as this one are nearly as fast . The memory and SSD will be way more noticable. Definetly go SSD. You can get a MX300 275GB Crucial drive now for about $60 and a 500GB+ for around $110 on sale. Also search the web and see if this machine will accept 16GB total, a lot of Dell machines accept more memory than Dell admits to. They like to artificially create PC price ranges by saying the memory is limited on the low-end machines. With a SSD and 16GB ram this would be an awesome value, especially if you bought it at the lowest sale price I've seen the past 2 months ($249.99). Always check the price online, even if the store or ads have higher prices. I snagged one for $259.99 last week on a one day price match with their own website, while the price in the store was $329.99! Look up the chipsets at ark.intel.com it may help you find out if it supports more memory than 8GB (though the Dell BIOS may or may not cooperate) Good Luck. Northbridge Chipset is a Broadwell-U Rev. 09 Southbridge Chipset is a ID5CC9 Rev. 03 If someone gets more than 8GB in this machine and working, let us know!

  • QuestionCan this laptop harddrive be replaced with solidstate type. ? How easily accessible is it.

    Asked by Towney.

    • Answer It's about a 10 minute preocess to remove the 17 screws and keyboard to get to the memory and hard drive. You also need to coat the screws with blue thread lock (loctitie os similar) when putting them back in, or they will fall out in a couple months after heating cooling cycles and transporting the laptop, and the flexing and jogging around that goes with that.
