Typically at the end of that 1-year trial you have to start paying for it (McAfee or whoever it is) or uninstall it then.
Honestly, the built-in Windows Defender is quite good - it even has ransomeware protection you just have to turn it on yourself (search the internet for how to).
There are also lots of good, free antivirus out there like Avast and others.
