It is not an M.2 SSD. It is a standard SSD so it can run up to speeds that are stated for the particular SSD. However, an M.2 can be installed in this device. I just purchased a 250GB Samsung 960 EVO and it helps with the speed quite a bit. Be mindful when purchasing a M.2 SSD and make sure the desired transfer speeds are what you are looking for. Many, M.2 SSD's are no faster than a standard SSD.
