• Yes most any external CD/DVD drive will work. I have a old Sony external (brick) that's about 10 years old that worked fine. Windows loaded the driver with no problems

• Yes, Dell sells an external dvd writer and I think a blue ray writer that plugs into one of the many usb ports. I bought the dvd drive for under $50.00. The downside is that there is no dvd player that comes with the basic windows 8 software but you can download a free VLC media player. The downside of this is that it does not fully utilize the screen. This problem will likely get fixed with a later patch however.
