Ah yes ... "Affordable options are available" ... to BUY an optical drive. So the real answer is YES ... companies want to sell you a device without an installed optical device. [ I bought my DELL Inspiron 3670, in-part, because it had a built in optical drive. Hard to find anymore. ]

Much content is downloadable and with network speeds this is the preferred method of many consumers. The optical drive has become needed less by a large majority of consumers and this is why it often is omitted from computer specs in current models. Affordable external options are available for those consumers that do need an optical drive option.
