“3.5mm doesn't work. Hdmi thru soundbar turns off monitor if I use headphones (soundbar obviously still on). If no sound, no monitor. Any suggestions?”

I answered my own question! Soundbar auto turn off! Thats why monitor dies!

Once again, I'm answering my own question. Lol. My soundbar was automatically turning off because audio was coming thru headphones. Whew. All good.
