cannot get surround speakers to work null

I have 5.1 setup not 7.2 but have surround by selection of Dolby surround and when I check inputs and outputs they show all of my speakers and I get sound on all. For cable I seem to need hdmi and the same for my blue Ray which auto chose the correct out put
